Cocoa Percentage

Keep the cocoa content in mind! The higher the cocoa content in chocolate, the lower its sugar content is likely to be. Look for dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa for a rich and intense flavor without added sugars.

Chocolate that is too high in cocoa can taste very bitter! I would not choose 90-100% cocoa unless you enjoy the taste. Aim for 60% or higher.


Opt for sugar-free chocolates made with high-quality ingredients like organic cocoa beans. Avoid artificial additives and preservatives whenever possible.

Here are some common artificial additives and preservatives to avoid when possible:

  • Artificial sweeteners: Aspartame, saccharin, sucralose
  • Artificial colors: Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1
  • Preservatives: Sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene)
